Giant Zombie

  • Anyone find a way to kill the huge zombies?  I tried hitting it with a car, several times, then when my car started to catch on fire, I got out and shot him in the head (I think) 3 times with a shotgun.  Then I had to run away.

      Loading editor
    • i am having trouble with that one to. the only thing that seems to work for me is shooting it a million times while someone else distracts it...

        Loading editor
    • So you have been able to kill one?  Is there any point to using all that ammo?  Is there any pay off for killing one?

        Loading editor
    • Grenades and fire bottles.

        Loading editor
    • How many grenades/fire bottles would you say?  Not eager to try and not bring enough, then die.  Also, is there a point?  Do you get anything, like fame?

        Loading editor
    • Grenades 1-3 in my experience, fire bottles have been a bit more unpredictable, but if its all I have I'll usually take nine if I know I'm going to fight one.

        Loading editor
    • Thanks!

    • And didn't answer yor second question. If it a hunt you get the same things as the other freak zombie. (idk if each one gives a different amount havnt paid that much attention) But as far as I know if you just kill one no you don't get anything. I only fight them, if it's a hunt or if its close to my base, or a friends base.

    • Drive into him and whilst he's on the floor run over him again.. this usually works for me but can be abit tricky. if that doesnt work keep driving into him an when the car goes on fire try parking it as close to him as possible an the explosion should kill him.

    • I've tangled with my fair share of Big Un's (Probably killed about 8 or so give or take) and I can tell you right now even with my strongest character (Heavy Weapons specialist Marcus) it's not easy to do on your own. If you don't have a powerful gun like a shotgun or powerful rifle you're better off not tangoing with the big guys alone. They'll rip you apart if they get a hold of you so don't melee it, stay away from him and shoot him in the head. When he crouches he's going to run at you, you should use your dodging button when he gets near you or simply move away. Just keep shooting and dodging until it dies.

Don't bother killing it if it's not for a mission you don't get anything special. It only counts as one of the 5 freaks zombies you have to kill for an achievement. (You have to kill one of each kind, screamer, swat/armored, feral, bloater/suicide and big un)

Another easier way to kill them is to hit them with your vehicle at high speed and make him fall on his back and then run over his head. This however will severely damage your vehicle and will most likely pop your tires.

However, don't bother killing it if it's not for a mission or absolutely necessary it's not worth the wasted ammo. You don't get anything special. It only counts as one of the 5 freaks zombies you have to kill for an achievement. (You have to kill one of each kind, screamer, swat/armored, feral, bloater/suicide and big un. There is also a similar achievement but you have to kill all 5 zombies with your vehicle.)

      Anyways hope that helps.

    • its best to avoid them if possible. But if you hit them with melee enough they will die but also its best to shoot them in the head

        Loading editor
    • If you dodge its charge and it runs into something, the Big 'Un will be stunned for a few seconds. Puts hands on knees to catch a breather, holds still. That's then you melee or plink some headshots. Rinse and repeat.

        Loading editor
    • Is it easy to dodge?  Do you need to push the dodge button or just move aside?  I don't want to test it on my own because I don't want to die, but if anyones tried the move aside and shoot/hit strategy...

I see this was answered above, nevermind.  Thanks

    • Either way works...once that bugger gets going he doesn't deviate. I like to just sprint a couple steps to the side; I think is's a little cheaper stamina cost. Every bit helps.

    • It appears that they can't go through regular sized doorways so try and use that to your advantage if you can.

    • Can they get in a house through a window?

    • One at the Wilkerson's tried to get in through the window and couldn't.  He did damage the barricades we were putting up, but that's it.

I did have one glitch through my fence at the Trucker base, but that ended up being a really bad choice for him.  All the survivors pounced on him, and it went down quickly.  We're now keeping him as a pet and calling him Snuggles...

    • I had to defend the engineer/garden survivors right outside of Marshal. One of those bastards came around the corner of the building across the way. I threw 4 fire bottles shot him 6 times and cleaved at that Fat-fuck with an axe for about 20 seconds. These things are brutal. Watching his actions play a vital role in taking him down easier. Wait for him to stall (stand still or hunch over taking a breath) he reacts like this "after" you use grenades, fire bottles, or hit him with a car a couple times. But if your going toe to toe with him it takes some practice. Zod knows what he's sayin',, strafe (dodge) to the left or right when he does the "Bald Bull charge," It works well when your against a wall and he runs into it. Once he hits the wall take a couple swings at him and break off to see what he's gonna do. It takes some time but learn how to dance with him. "DON'T LET HIM GRAB YOU!!" Yer fucking DONE once he does that. Oh and if you have a machine gun, light his head up with one.... XD

Your post made me think I'd be fine this time around and wouldn't have to shoot him through the cracks between the boarded up window as he couldn't get in. He got in...

    • Really?!?  I've had three house engagements with these guys and they stood outside bashing themselves against the walls.  Easiest kills of this jerks I've ever had.  Was it your base or a random house?  Sorry about the false sense of safety...that usually only happens when I go on dates with the ladies and use those budget condoms...(p.s. spend the extra dollar...it's worth it)

Joking aside, with these house engagments (they were siege missions), when I saw the Big uns, I ran back inside, waited til they started pounding on the windows, went back outside, and started plinking them in the head.  As long as I didn't get too close, I was fine.  And if I did and he noticed me, I moved away until he lost interest and went back to plinking him.  Like I said, relatively easy encounter.  Now, all the zombies that were drawn in by my constant stream of gunfire...well...that's a different story.

It was at the Wilkersons. They might have just clipped through though. It happened twice the first time he did his rush thing and rushed straight throw the door, got a hold of me, I panicked and pressed the xbox button and quit. The second time he got in through the window and I started chucking molotovs like crazy and caught everything and everyone in the room on fire.

    • LOL, I've done both those things before and felt so ashamed afterwards.  If it makes you feel any better, the Wilkersons are total douchebags, and they deserve any bad stuff you do to them.

    • The best thing to do if you actually want to kill one is so do these..

      1.  Pop out of your vehicle and throw a timer or something to alert zombies.

      2. Run over all zombies.

      3. Drive a bit away from the 'Big Un', get out, and unload a clip or two of your highest caliber rifle into his chest/head.

      4. If he get's close. Rinse and repeat step 3. (Should only take 1-2 drive and go's)

He drops after 2 clips +/-

    • Big'Uns are easy if you use the right strategy. Heres what I do. Stay a safe distance and wait for him to charge you, then use LB+B to roll out of the way. Usually after a charge he will bend down for a few seconds to catch his breath, when he does this get behind him and beat on him a few times, then get to a safe distance again and repeat.

I've killed a few without getting a scratch this way.

        Loading editor
    • I stopped reading after you said "get behind him and beat on him...".  I decided at that point this info wasn't for me...

    • I have killed several so far, but thankfullly have not had to face one alone.  They usually show up for me when helping other surviors on a beseiged quest.  I have killed them by softening them up with a vehicle first and then piling on with the other survivors to beat them to death with melee weapons.  I do my best to clear out the other zeds first before confronting the big uns.

    • I lost Ed to one. I never have a problem with these big bastards, but the horde who heard him hit the tree didn't help. Bastard tore Ed in half.

        Loading editor
    • I use a simple strategy I call, "The Death-Waltz"

First make sure he is the only zed in the area, this can be done by shooting a gun and picking off the weaklings... If you run into two special zeds (counting the big un') get to the nearest car and get away. Two specials, unless they're bloaters, are way too much for just one guy/girl.

Secondly, wait and see if the big un' is interested in you or something else. If he is after you proceed to step 4 if not go to step 3.

Thirdly, dump a few bullets into him so he sees you and now is aggravated enough to charge at you.

Fourth, he should charge you if you are far away enough, make sure to not get within melee distance! Wait for his charge and dodge out of the way, unless you enjoy being in a mound of recently burned zed bodies.

Fifth, he should've run into something like a wall. Use this time to throw grenades at him or get into a building that has few doors and minimal windows. Try to avoid Molotov's and firebombs because they're unpredictable.

Sixthly, after you've thrown grenades or run to cover keep going from step 3 on until you've killed the fat bastard. Hope this was helpful.

    • Clearing out all the other zombies first helps, and powerhouses with pro wrestling can 1 hit most other freaks like swats easily enough.

Sometimes after I dodge a charge I manage to stunlock them long enough to bash its head in, sometimes i ram it and it goes down as my car goes up in flames, backing into them with a truck works, and from when I've done it the truck survives that way too.

Also, I've had a Big'Un inside too, spawned inside a building when I had to rescue a survivor lol, was NOT the smoothest rescue.

Also the meleeing is done by powerhouse heavy weapon specialist marcus with all maxed stats.

    • Just as a warning they can glitch into buildings so don't fully rely on that. Ont actually got in the wilkerson house.

        Loading editor
    • Ive had a big un get into one of my buildings quite a few times.  Usually, that isn't a problem because if the building is occupied - it doesn't last long getting ganged up on by mul;tiple survivors.    I used to kill them by running them over twice with a car (but good luck getting it to the shop after that), but I found a better way that doesn't waste all my vehicles.... Usually when I fight them it's because of a mission (Big Un Sighting).  You will have an npc with you.... in my experience, the npc's are hard to kill, they crouch down with a red tag for a moment then get back up... so I use them as bait.  I kill him with a fire axe (its the only axe worth 90 influence).  hit him twice when he bends over to take a breath after charging, or just wail at him when he picks your npc ally up.  It's literally like 8 hits or so and he dies, he's actually gotten quite easy as long as you have decent timing.

        Loading editor
    • I dont know what the problem is with dodging then meleeing him from behind. works for me everytime, once you get it down the big'uns dont seem like that big a deal.

        Loading editor
    • LOL, it was just a juvenile joke playing on the words being used (him bending over...getting behind him...bashing).  I should have risen above making such a comment, but it struck me as funny at the time.

That approach works really well, as do the doging, shooting in the head, and other techniques people have been suggesting.  The Big uns aren't as devastating once you learn how to deal with them, but sometimes some random thing can turn what was once easy to a total clusterfu$k..like one teleporting inside a house.

        Loading editor
    • Same technique used to kill chargers in dead island. Put your back against a wall wait for him to charge, dodge, he staggers, puts his head down and now your free to pummel his head with anything at your disposal. You will notice when his head is down like this, any hit you do appears to hit his head even body shots. You may have to do this 2 or 3 times depending if you're alone, your weapon specialization is high and the type of weapon.

It's not hard.  Clear the area.  Keep your distance.  Unload with a powerful rifle.  Cake walk.

I also had the big guy smashing his way in the Wilkinsons House , And i screamed like a lil girly when it happened , i also set everything on fire with molotovs and finaly took him down with some shotgun rain in his big ugly face !

iff your that scared just use a Modern truck ( the red ones with the 4 doors) and charge into him , he will fall down and at that point you drive over his head .

Dont try using another car cuz you will end up popping the weels and turning it on fire .

    • i think the kill count for the poor vehicles is higher than the big uns  in this conversation, yikes! you realize you dont have to destroy your vehicle to run it over, right? first off, never go full speed. you will loose your front wheels and possibly your doors if you go too fast. make sure you have just enough momentum for a little love tap, and as soon as you tip him slam the gas. you need acceleration, but usually you can run him over before he gets up without loosing your doors, wheels, or even causing enough damage for the vehicle to start smoking.

i even got away with my bumper once. it takes just a few tries to get the hang of it, but its very effective, and if you have a workshop, your vehicle will be fine the next day.

otherwise, i recomend sniping its head while its wandering. you can usually get close enough, and it makes less noise, although it attracks more zombies for me when i do that.

    • Drop a mine about 20m away from juggernaut, fire at him to gain attention and the bull charge. repeat.....

takes 2 mines that you can produce in the workshop and they are toast, cheapest and easiest method. Just continue to build mines when supplies allow to build stockpile.

    • the four door modern truck, do not hit him at full speed....just from a stop and like 15 or 20 feet hit him, it will pop the front tires and knock him over, hit the gas again and drive right over him. works everytime. or put a few mines down like the person above. or use a large revolver like the anvil.

        Loading editor
    • Mines.

Place a mine. Yell at the big 'un. Run away so he paths directly over the mine. Repeat if he gets up. Also works great on Hordes.

Do not try to hop out of your vehicle, place a mine, and get back in and back up before it goes off. Never works.
