How important is Ed Jones in the story line? I didn´t get the doctor in time, so Ed died. I wonder, if it´s better, to start from the beginning. Again!

I used to think Ed was the weakest most incompetent character because when controlled by AI he seems to be really retarded. But once I played as him for a bit and leveled him up he is a pretty competent survivor.
I still havent figured out how to choose abilities when you max a skill
Rrrowsdower, if you mean specializations, utility skills and that kind of thing...open your journal, move to the second page (second from left), and you will see a list of all of your current character's skills. Scroll all the way to the bottom and if that character has a skill they can choose, it will show up there.
Generally, scores of 4 or more in the foundation skill are needed before special skills show up. So, for example, I think you need 4 stars in reflexes before sweep kick and high kick show up.
Then, you choose which one you want by first selecting it with x, and then holding down x for a few moments. The choice is permanent for that character, so make sure it's what you want. Not all characters can have all skills, but the abilities for Powerhouse or Reflex characters can be badass. Ed is a Reflex character, so that means you can pick either the sweep kick or the high kick. I agree, though, once he's leveled up...watch out zeds
Reflex seems to be a super rare skill. I recruited so far 14 survivors (by radios and enclave survivors), I easily have 6 powerhouse but zero reflex.
With reflex the character regenerate stamina much faster (AKA he can run or fight longer with less rest needed).
Sweep kick seems to be bugged. The description said it has a chance to trip Zeds. Currently what I see is it always trips Zeds (this may be fixed in future, beware). Further more, Sweep kick is an area attack. You can used it to disable a group of 5-6 Zeds clustered if you kite them.
Reflex is so broken that I have to intentionally NOT use Ed and Sam to keep the challenge up.
To understand what I mean, remove everything on Ed (even the backpack). Give him 3 painkillers (you will get scratches when melee fighting), give him a loaded pistol (silenced preferred but not a must). I use this configuration to kill all the hordes and infestation at Marshall (pistol is for Bloater and screamer). Feral will need a little training on knowing when to dodge the pounce and do ground instant kill. Don't get cocky, please avoid the Juggernauts.
No worries, I got him killed when defending a horde off. Pretty sure he didn't care much, aside from Marcus, to anyone else. Ed wouldn't have lived long at my rate anyway.
I have Ed with 7* in fighting and reflexes and he is pretty much indestructible, with instant counter and the spin kick he can pretty much murder everything even without a weapon including Ferals.
Don't let your Ed die, Reflexes is a rare and invaluable skill.
Ed isn't important. No one is. But he is special.
But even if he dies, you got Sam as the other Reflex character, just like Marcus has Jacob as the other Powerhouse character.
If Ed dies, do you know how to check if he's really dead, like somewhere in the journal? I didn't get to do the mission to escort Doc Hanson over. He disappeared in my list of survivors.
I don't get how my Ed died, he was perfectly fine, he even had the best mood out of everyone, but the help the Wilkerson missions failed and when he was eating dinner, I saw him drop dead from nothing, also,my med lab was fully upgraded, so that cured him, still dropped dead.
No hs not, hes just a cool player. I usually play as him
